Chiropractic Care in South Edmonton
Chiropractic care focuses on the assessment and treatment of concerns involving the musculoskeletal system, including the spine, joints, muscles and surrounding tissues.
People often see a chiropractor because of back or neck discomfort, stiffness, reduced mobility, headaches, sports-related issues or other concerns that affect how they move and feel.
At Purity Health & Wellness in South Edmonton, chiropractic care begins with an individual assessment so treatment can be based on your specific symptoms, goals and comfort level.
What Does a Chiropractor Do?
A chiropractor assesses how your joints, muscles and spine are moving and how those areas may be contributing to discomfort or reduced function.
Depending on your needs, treatment may include:
Joint manipulation
Joint mobilization
Soft-tissue techniques
Movement assessment
Mobility work
Exercise recommendations
Postural or movement education
Home-care guidance
Not every chiropractic appointment needs to involve the same treatment. Your chiropractor can adjust the approach based on what is appropriate for you.
What Can Chiropractic Care Help With?
People commonly seek chiropractic care for concerns such as:
Lower-back pain or stiffness
Neck pain or reduced mobility
Shoulder and upper-back tension
Joint stiffness
Headaches associated with neck or muscle tension
Sports-related aches and strains
Reduced range of motion
Musculoskeletal discomfort related to work or daily activity
Because similar symptoms can have different causes, an assessment is often the best way to determine whether chiropractic care is appropriate.
What Happens During Your First Chiropractic Appointment?
Your first appointment typically includes a health history and physical assessment.
Your chiropractor may ask:
When your symptoms started
What makes them better or worse
Whether you have had previous injuries
Which movements or activities are difficult
What you would like to achieve through treatment
They may also assess range of motion, joint movement, posture, strength or other aspects of musculoskeletal function.
From there, your chiropractor can discuss treatment options and answer any questions you may have.
What Is a Chiropractic Adjustment?
A chiropractic adjustment is a controlled technique applied to a joint to improve movement or address a specific area of restriction.
Some adjustments can produce a popping or cracking sound.
This sound is typically caused by a change in pressure within the joint and is not the goal of treatment. An adjustment can still be effective even if no sound occurs.
Your chiropractor should explain the technique beforehand and treatment should always remain within your comfort level.
Do Chiropractic Adjustments Hurt?
Chiropractic treatment should not feel excessively painful.
Some techniques are quick and specific, while others are slower and gentler.
People occasionally experience temporary soreness after treatment, similar to the feeling that can occur after exercise or massage.
If you are nervous about adjustments or prefer a gentler approach, discuss this with your chiropractor. Treatment can often be modified.
Do Chiropractors Only Treat Backs?
No.
Although chiropractic care is commonly associated with the spine, chiropractors work with the broader musculoskeletal system.
Depending on the practitioner and your concern, treatment may involve areas such as:
Neck
Shoulders
Hips
Knees
Ankles
Wrists
Elbows
The appropriate treatment depends on your assessment rather than simply focusing on the spine.
Chiropractic Care for Back Pain
Back pain is one of the most common reasons people see a chiropractor, but back pain can have many different causes.
A chiropractic assessment may look at joint mobility, muscle tension, movement patterns and other factors that could be contributing to your discomfort.
Treatment may include hands-on joint techniques, soft-tissue work, exercises or mobility recommendations.
If your back pain is sudden, severe, associated with significant trauma or accompanied by concerning neurological symptoms, medical assessment may be appropriate.
Chiropractic Care for Neck Pain
Neck discomfort can be influenced by many factors, including joint stiffness, muscular tension, repetitive work, posture, activity levels and injury.
A chiropractor can assess how your neck and surrounding areas are moving and determine whether chiropractic care is appropriate.
Treatment may involve joint mobilization or manipulation, soft-tissue techniques, mobility exercises and other strategies based on your individual needs.
Chiropractic Care for Headaches
Some headaches may be associated with tension or musculoskeletal issues involving the neck and upper back.
In these situations, chiropractic assessment may be useful in determining whether joint mobility, muscle tension or movement patterns are contributing factors.
Headaches can also have many other causes, so new, severe, unusual or persistent headaches should be medically assessed.
Chiropractic Care for Sports and Active Lifestyles
Chiropractic care is not only for people experiencing long-term back pain.
Athletes and active individuals may also seek chiropractic treatment for joint stiffness, limited mobility, movement-related discomfort or recovery from physical activity.
Treatment may focus on restoring movement and helping you return comfortably to the activities you enjoy.
Chiropractic vs Physiotherapy
Chiropractic care and physiotherapy can overlap considerably.
Chiropractic care often places greater emphasis on joint mobility, spinal function and hands-on musculoskeletal treatment.
Physiotherapy often places greater emphasis on rehabilitation, exercise, strengthening and restoring physical function.
Both professions may use manual therapy, exercise and movement recommendations.
The right choice depends on what you are experiencing and your individual goals.
Chiropractic vs Massage Therapy
Massage therapy primarily focuses on muscles and other soft tissues.
Chiropractic care more commonly assesses joint function, mobility and the broader musculoskeletal system.
For someone experiencing both joint stiffness and muscular tension, the two approaches may sometimes be used together.
Chiropractic vs Osteopathy
Chiropractic and osteopathic treatment are both hands-on approaches to the musculoskeletal system.
Chiropractic care commonly uses specific joint and spinal techniques, while osteopathic treatment often incorporates broader manual techniques involving multiple areas of the body.
There can be overlap, and the experience may vary considerably depending on the practitioner.
Can Chiropractic Care Be Combined With Massage or Physiotherapy?
Yes, when appropriate.
Different treatments may address different parts of the same concern.
For example:
Chiropractic care may focus on joint mobility while massage addresses surrounding muscle tension.
Physiotherapy may focus on strength and rehabilitation while chiropractic care addresses relevant joint restrictions.
Massage may be used alongside chiropractic care when soft-tissue tension is contributing to discomfort.
More treatment is not automatically better. The combination should always make sense for your individual needs and goals.
Frequently Asked Questions About Chiropractic Care
Do I need a referral to see a chiropractor?
Many people can book directly with a chiropractor. If you are planning to submit treatment to an insurance plan, check your individual policy for any referral or coverage requirements.
Will I have to get adjusted?
Not necessarily. Treatment should be based on your assessment, goals and preferences. Your chiropractor can discuss different treatment options with you.
Why do joints sometimes make a popping sound?
The sound is generally related to changes in pressure within the joint. It does not mean that bones are being put back into place and is not required for treatment to be effective.
How many chiropractic appointments will I need?
There is no universal number of treatments. Frequency depends on the nature of your concern, how long it has been present, your response to treatment and your individual goals.
Can chiropractic care help with muscle tension?
Chiropractic care may include soft-tissue techniques and may address musculoskeletal issues that contribute to tension. Massage therapy may also be appropriate when muscular tension is the primary concern.
Can I get massage and chiropractic treatment at the same clinic?
Yes. Purity Health & Wellness offers both chiropractic care and massage therapy in our South Edmonton clinic.
Can physiotherapy and chiropractic care be used together?
Yes, when appropriate. Physiotherapy and chiropractic care may address different aspects of movement, mobility and rehabilitation.
Is chiropractic care only for adults?
Chiropractors may work with people of different ages depending on their training, scope of practice and the individual's needs. Treatment techniques should always be adapted appropriately.
